NLS (National Lifeguard Service) lifeguard certification
The National Lifeguard certification (NLS or NL) is both nationally, and internationally recognized. Candidates will learn the importance of lifeguarding principles, sound judgment and the responsibilities of this very important role.
This certification will be provided with the training, if needed by successful candidates.
How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:
The Assistant Head Lifeguard is responsible for supervising, providing site guidance and direction, as well as maintaining control of the activities within the aquatic facility and providing safe, clean, enjoyable experiences for all users, when the Head Lifeguard is inaccessible or off-duty. For all other times, the Assistant Head Lifeguard performs the Lifeguard duties and responsibilities.
Clear communication, leadership, injury prevention and risk mitigation are integral parts of the Assistant Head Lifeguard’s duty. All Lifeguards are to maintain constant surveillance and ensure safe behaviour of individuals in pool area and respond immediately and appropriately in the event of an emergency.
The Assistant Head Lifeguard ensures that all Lifeguards, while the Head Lifeguard is off-duty or inaccessible, demonstrate safe behaviours, rescue skills, first aid capabilities and attend to all incidents and injuries. Occupational health and safety is a major responsibility of this position
The Assistant Head Lifeguard also performs customer service duties as may be required for the operation of the aquatic facility, assisting with regular and escalated matters related to members of the public.
Must be flexible to work all required shifts, including weekends and holidays.
- Assists the Supervisor with Lifeguard schedules, guarding routines and placement of guard rotations.
- Responsible to ensure all staff members on the pool deck are appropriately certified and physically/mentally capable to perform the function(s) assigned on a daily basis.
- Provide staff development and performance feedback directly to the Head Lifeguard.
- Assist with coordination and development of and participate in all ‘in-service’ training programs.
- Supports staff with the understanding and compliance of TRCA’s Lifeguard Manual.
Duties and responsibilities performed as Lifeguard:
- Participate in all lifeguarding routines, rescue procedures, administration of first aid, operation of public address system and other general lifeguarding duties.
- Create safe, supervised aquatic areas and maintain complete vigilance to minimize risks.
- Maintain constant surveillance of individuals in pool area and act immediately to incidents and emergencies appropriately to ensure the safety of all individuals.
- Perform preliminary screening of swimmers by executing a swim test to establish water skill level; Ensure visitors entering the pool meet the minimum requirements of the Aquatic Admission Standards during all swims.
- Provide care and treatment as required for all minor and major incidents until the arrival of emergency medical services (if required).
- Enforce park and swimming rules and regulations continually to patrons.
- Ensure appropriate adult to child ratios are met and that the aquatic facility is operating within capacity limits.
- Maintain complete and accurate records of incidents and accidents, swimming occurrences, missing persons, daily maintenance, shift time schedules, opening and closing procedures and any other forms and reports as required.
- Inspect/test pool chemistry and complete records. Contact appropriate staff to correct deficiencies immediately when required.
- Perform general maintenance and cleaning duties in areas such as pool, washrooms, changerooms, grounds and work areas.
- Provide exceptional customer service and engage with participants to provide education about potential hazards and safe practices when participating in activities in and around water.
- May require physical activity for extended periods of time in all weather conditions.
What will you need to succeed:
- Must be 16 years of age or older, with current NLS (National Lifeguard Service) pool certification which must remain valid throughout employment[RF1] .
- Must maintain and demonstrate NLS performance standards throughout the course of employment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; must exhibit clear and concise communication in both non-emergency and emergency situations.
- Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
- Conflict resolution and de-escalation skills.
- Superior customer service skills.
- Clearance of the Vulnerable Sector Screening is required.
- May be required to lift or carry objects that could weigh up to 50 pounds.
- Two (2) years’ lifeguarding experience is considered an asset.
- Previous experience in a supervisory capacity in a working or volunteer capacity is considered an asset.
