How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:

Reporting to the Technologist or Coordinator and under the direction of the Project Manager, the Crew Leader position is responsible for the daily support of planting implementation, communicating direction to field staff, and simple maintenance of vehicles and equipment. The Crew Leader provides support, technical expertise and leadership regarding planting restoration plans across the TRCA jurisdiction and leads crews to undertake planting implementation.

Overall, this position plays an integral role in the implementation and restoration projects including wetlands, streams, shoreline enhancements, forests, meadows, and storm water management. Additionally, this position is responsible for inspecting the work performed and completed by staff, as directed by the Coordinator or Technologist to ensure adherence to corporate and municipal policies, procedures and by-laws, and compliance with provincial and federal legislation. This position contributes to the strategic plan objectives including improvement of water quality and aquatic ecosystem health; a network of green space and green infrastructure; and improving protection of our natural systems.

Major Responsibilities:
 

Project Implementation

  • Responsible for site preparation and leading planting crews
  • Provide on-site support and site-supervision tasks within planting projects
  • Constantly adapt to site condition changes (weather, unexpected scenarios, equipment issues, design issues)
  • Adapt to changes in planting plan on a regular basis under the direction of a Project Manager or Coordinator/Technologist
  • Operate and maintain machinery and equipment as required (ranges from small tools to heavy equipment)
  • Ensure health and safety measures are met
  • Ensure site remains organized and in good condition
  • May be asked to perform site visits including project start up, progress of implementation, and close out
  • Provide general labor support

Project Planning

  • Interpret planting plans
  • Prepare on-site implementation documentation
  • Take part and/or obtain Ontario Health and Safety Documentation:
    • Form 1000
    • Ministry of Labour
    • Ontario Health and Safety
    • Book 7 Traffic Control
    • Water Safety
    • Incident Reports – Form 8
    • Vehicle and Equipment MTO CVOR Guidelines
    • Rescue Plans
  • Employee Training and Certification Participate in or lead daily safety meetings, including tailgate meetings, hazard identification and emergency planning
  • Transport dangerous goods (Fuel, Oil)
  • Participate in the collection of field data to identify and guide habitat restoration opportunities.
  • Adhere to TRCA Policy while executing daily tasks:
    • TRCA Vehicle Safety, off road utility vehicles contractors, self-propelled machinery, fuel handling and storage, working in/on water, working around water, personal protective equipment, transportation of employees and seat belts, WHMIS/GHS, heat stress, working in cold, general road safety and traffic control.

Coordination

  • Oversee staff on-site on a daily basis under the direction of the Project Manager and/or Technologist/Coordinator 
  • May be asked to participate in or execute daily project logistics, tracking and scheduling
    • Vehicles, equipment, materials and staff time tracking
    • Vehicle and equipment maintenance
    • Site deliveries
    • Changing daily requirements
  • Communicate on-site with other agencies (occasionally and as needed) under the direction of a Project Manager and/or Technologist/Coordinator
    • Upper and Lower tier municipalities, Federal agencies (Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Parks Canada, Environment Canada, Canadian Wildlife Services, Transport Canada, Ports Toronto, Provincial agencies (Ministry of Natural Resources Forestry, Ministry of Environment and Climate change, Hydro One, Ontario Power Generation, Ministry of Transportation, Other Conservation Authorities, Niagara Escarpment Commission,   
    • Non-Governmental Agencies (e.g. Greater Toronto Airport Authority)
    • Community groups, landowners and the general public

Staff Development Support

  • Provide support for overseeing seasonal and full-time staff as needed
    • Seasonal staff during spring and fall
    • Assists in selections, interviews, hiring of seasonal field staff following TRCA’s interviewing and hiring protocol
    • Assist in or lead components of staff orientation
      • Two day orientation training (vehicle and equipment, safe loading and unloading, load securement, mechanical shop safety, utility vehicle, tool safety, operational procedures, post pounder, planting techniques, gas operated equipment, working around equipment and corporate vehicle training)
    • Mentor staff and provide daily staff direction, depending on the project
    • Adhere to TRCA’s performance management program
    • Provide input into incident reporting
    • Aid in the evaluation of performance of staff bi-annually
  • Works in collaboration with Project Manager and/or Technologist/Coordinator to manage staff conflicts and to develop resolutions
  • May be asked to help oversee approximately 5-10 staff
  • Provide input into daily site scheduling organization.

What will you need to succeed:

  • Post-secondary Degree or Diploma in resource management, restoration ecology, environmental sciences, fish and wildlife management or related field.
  • Valid Ontario G driver’s license in good standing.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience related to major tasks; resource management, restoration ecology, environmental sciences, fish and wildlife management or related field.
  • Knowledge of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, fish and wildlife and habitat requirements, Environmental regulatory legislation, plant identification and ecology.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
  • Effective problem-solving skills and leadership skills including staff supervision, coaching and mentoring.
  • Computer proficiency with software experience (MS PowerPoint, Excel, Word, ArcMap experience an asset).
  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work as a team member.
