Core Functions:

The Special Project Officer is responsible for the implementation of projects under the Wildlife Unit of the Environment and Remedial Works department. The incumbent will ensure the coordination and creation of a Cree-led Lake Sturgeon management plan. The incumbent works closely with the Wildlife team on the implementation of special projects for the Wildlife Unit. The incumbent will also assist with other ongoing projects within the Wildlife Unit.

 

Functional Responsibilities

  • Oversee the implementation of a special project on Lake Sturgeon in collaboration with the Wildlife Administrator and Wildlife Biologist.
  • Develop and maintain excellent working relations with Cree communities and organizations, key stakeholders and external consultants, in order to facilitate the development and delivery of projects.
  • Work in partnership with funding partners to ensure contribution agreements are fulfilled.
  • Collaborate with various Cree Nation Government departments and Cree entities to access and implement applicable initiatives and projects.
  • Organize and facilitate project meetings as well as prepare agenda and minutes and assist in the drafting of reports and other documents.
  • Ensure project deliverables and activities are completed within allocated timeframes.
  • Work closely with the Wildlife team to ensure effective cooperation on projects and advancement of the wildlife files.
  • Participate in the drafting of new funding agreements and reports when required.

Communication Responsibilities

  • Participate in various working groups and committees related to special projects.
  • Work closely with Cree and Algonquin communities to ensure the completion of the project’s mandate.
  • Liaise with industry stakeholders to identify concerns related to the project.
  • Liaise with various Cree Nation Government departments and Cree entities to access and implement applicable initiatives and projects.

Reporting Responsibilities

  • Develop and track budget based on action plans and forecasted project costs.
  • Conduct follow-up assessments of all completed activities and evaluate project results.
  • Provide regular and accurate progress and final reports on approved projects and programs to the Wildlife Administrator.

Other Responsibilities

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills in area(s) of responsibility.
  • Perform other duties as required. 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Certification

  • College Diploma in Environmental Science, Wildlife Management, Environmental Studies, Anthropology, Geography, or related field. 

Experience

  • One to three years of relevant work experience. 

Languages

  • Fluency in verbal Cree and English.
  • Fluency in French is an asset.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative.
  • Proven organizational skills and ability to coordinate multiple projects.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Works well in a team environment.
  • Proven ability to be discreet and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to problem-solve and to think strategically.
  • Proven success in maintaining strong communication, including the ability to facilitate effectively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products. 

Additional Requirements:

  • Willingness to work both in an office setting and outside.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally.

The Cree Nation Government may, at its discretion, waive any or all of the aforementioned requirements if a suitable candidate who is a JBNQA beneficiary accepts to follow a training plan determined by the Cree Nation Government as a condition of employment.
