Core Functions:

The Wildlife Technician is responsible for assisting and providing support to the implementation of the Hunting, Fishing and Trapping Regime as per Section 24 of the James Bay Northern Quebec Agreement and for addressing various wildlife matters in the James Bay Territory, with the ultimate objective of ensuring the health of wildlife populations and respect of Cree rights and interests. More specifically, the incumbent is responsible for providing assistance with project research and all data collection monitoring and analysis related activities required for the preservation of wildlife populations and habitats in Eeyou Istchee territory.

 

Functional Responsibilities:

  • Collect and monitor wildlife and habitat information.
  • Conduct and participate in wildlife surveys or research projects in collaboration with communities, Cree Trapper’s Association (CTA), other governmental and non-governmental organizations.
  • Conduct necessary field work to document wildlife issues resulting from impacts of development projects.
  • Participate in the management of Cree harvesting information.
  • Conduct the necessary geographical information mapping and analysis work to monitor wildlife and its habitats.
  • Participate in developing and conducting wildlife awareness and education programs.
  • Provide advice and support to other Cree Nation Government staff involved in wildlife matters.
  • Assist in conducting scientific reviews on various wildlife subjects as required and assess wildlife population levels based on the best information available.
  • Assist the Wildlife staff in the planning of goals, the actions to be taken, and the execution of the work required to address wildlife matters 

Interaction/Communication Responsibilities:

  • Provide assistance to the CTA, Cree local governments and agencies in the conduct of wildlife assessment projects, surveys design, etc.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Compile and maintain wildlife information and databases. 

Reporting Responsibilities:

  • Assist in writing reports as required. 

Other Responsibilities:

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills in area(s) of responsibility.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education

  • College Diploma in Wildlife Conservation or related studies.

Experience

  • One to three years of relevant work experience.

Language:

  • Fluency in verbal Cree.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Fluency in French is an asset.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of geographical information mapping.
  • Customer-focused and service-oriented.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively.
  • Proven ability to be discreet and maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proven organizational skills.
  • Strong judgment and proven ability to problem-solve.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and to adapt to changing environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products. 

Additional Requirements:

  • Work may require exposure to changing weather.
  • Work may require frequent low to moderate physical effort.
  • Willingness to travel frequently.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license.

The Cree Nation Government may, at its discretion, waive any or all of the aforementioned requirements if a suitable candidate who is a JBNQA beneficiary accepts to follow a training plan determined by the Cree Nation Government as a condition of employment.
