How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:
The Head Camp Counsellor is responsible for coordinating the daily operations and interactive programs and activities for various age groups within TRCA’s and Toronto Montessori School’s Summer Day Camp. The Head Camp Counsellor develops and leads camp specific indoor and outdoor activities, active games, crafts and songs. 

In addition, assisting in the supervision of a group of camp counsellors, the Head Camp Counsellor is responsible for leading and supporting a team of 6 Camp Counsellors, travelling to three different camp sites, remaining on site with the camp counsellors and delivers a nature based camp programming while supporting the water based programming for the Toronto Montessori School Discovery Camp Partner. 
Occupational health and safety are a major responsibility of this position. 


Major Responsibilities:

Perform the following tasks under general supervision:

  • Represent TRCA in a professional manner and model an appropriate behaviour that fosters leadership, stewardship, and community.
  • Supervise and support all camp staff team members, providing training, ongoing feedback and formal evaluations during the course of camp.
  • Ensure that all incidents are documented and reported to senior staff in a timely manner.
  • Manage behavioural and/or challenging conflict situations, which includes de-escalation, documentation, parent follow-up and ensuring behaviours are addressed.
  • Organize camp staff schedule in accordance with camp activity schedule and communicate shift schedules with camp staff.
  • Interact with camp partner representatives to ensure a successful camp experience.
  • Organize a daily staff meeting to check in with camp staff, providing support as needed.
  • Lead interactive and engaging camp programs for summer camp groups of all ages and abilities.
  • Provide supervision of campers and volunteer camp assistants.
  • Coordinate the daily preparation and clean-up of camp programs.

What will you need to succeed:

  • Minimum of secondary school diploma or equivalent education.
  • Standard First Aid Certification Required.
  • Two (2) years’ experience working with children in a group setting.
  • Experience developing age appropriate, engaging, and interactive programs and activities.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of previous camp experience.
  • Previous experience leading or supervising camp staff is considered an asset.
  • Waterfront programming experience is considered an asset.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and co-operatively as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of natural history or environmentally related disciplines is an asset.
  • Standard First Aid & CPR/AED Level C certification required.
  • Successful completion of a Vulnerable Sector Screening is required.
