NLS (National Lifeguard Service) lifeguard certification
The National Lifeguard certification (NLS or NL) is both nationally, and internationally recognized. Candidates will learn the importance of lifeguarding principles, sound judgment and the responsibilities of this very important role.

 

CPR-C Certification

This certification will be provided with the training, if needed by  successful candidates.

How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:

The Lifeguard is responsible for maintaining control of the activities within the aquatic facility and providing a safe, clean, and enjoyable aquatic experiences for all users. A key role for this position is clear communication, injury prevention and risk mitigation. The Lifeguard must demonstrate safe work behaviours, rescue skills, first aid capabilities and emergency management of  all incidents and injuries.

 

Lifeguards perform general maintenance duties such as cleaning of buildings, grounds and pools to support the health and safety of staff and visitors. Occupational health and safety is a major responsibility of this position

 

This position performs customer service duties as may be required for the operation of the aquatic facility. Duties include cash handling, dispensing of swimming wristbands and general interaction with members of the public.

 

Must be flexible to work all required shifts, including weekends and holidays.

 

Major Responsibilities:
 

Perform the following tasks under general supervision:
 

  • Participate in all lifeguarding routines, rescue procedures, administration of first aid, operation of public address system and other general lifeguarding duties;
  • Create safe, supervised aquatic areas and maintain complete vigilance to minimize risks;
  • Ensure appropriate adult to child ratios are met and that the aquatic facility is operating within capacity limits;
  • Maintain constant surveillance of individuals in pool area and act immediately to incidents and emergencies appropriately to ensure the safety of all individuals;
  • Perform preliminary screening of swimmers by executing a swim test to establish water skill level;
  • Provide care and treatment as required for all minor and major incidents until the arrival of emergency medical services (if required);
  • Participate in all ‘in-service’ training programs;
  • Enforce park and swimming rules and regulations continually to patrons;
  • Maintain complete and accurate records of incidents and accidents, swimming occurrences, missing persons, daily maintenance, shift time schedules, opening and closing procedures and any other forms and reports as required;
  • Inspect/test pool chemistry and complete records. Contact appropriate staff to correct deficiencies immediately when required;
  • Perform general maintenance and cleaning duties in areas such as pool, washrooms, changerooms, grounds and work areas;
  • Provide good customer service and engage with participants to provide education about potential hazards and safe practices when participating in activities in and around water;
  • May require physical activity for extended periods of time in all weather conditions.
