The Opportunity:
This role is for an enthusiastic and experienced Lab Analyst with a strong background in molecular biology and/or microbiology techniques, specifically plating and qPCR techniques to join our team that applies the State-of-the-Art techniques for cannabis products testing. This is an exciting opportunity to work in the emerging and fast paced environment of cannabis testing.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability to independently analyze samples, validate methodologies, and troubleshoot assays. Experience with development, optimization, and validation microbiology methods, specifically in relation to detection of microbial contamination is required. The candidate will also need to be able to successfully work in a team environment, interact with external clients and vendors in a courteous manner, and perform duties in a highly regulated industry utilizing appropriate Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and guidelines. This position is given directions by the Sr. Application Scientist.
 

As a Lab Analyst you will:

  • Prepare clients samples, calibration standards, spiking cannabis matrices, recovery standards and quality control (QC) samples for routine analysis.
  • Maintain QC records and perform quality review of data to guarantee the accuracy and integrity of the results and to ensure that the generated data is defensible.
  • Use Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) system to record and document results during the processing of samples.
  • Follow SOPs to ensure quality control criteria are met and maintain all documentation that are required for compliance.
  • Validate (and / or verify) new methods when needed.
  • Assist in maintaining the laboratory ISO 17025:2017 standards, CALA accreditation, proficiency testing (PT) programs, GLP regulations and participate, when requested, in internal and external audits.
  • Maintain a positive work environment for lab staff. Support and comply with all Valens policies, Quality System and Health & Safety programs.
  • Ensure that deadlines/turn-around time (TATs) are met. Communicate any issues affecting TATs, quality, etc. with Sr. Application Scientist or Lab Director in a timely fashion.
  • Recommend SOPs revisions, help develop work instructions, and provide input to corrective action procedures.
  • Be proactive in ensuring that consumable supplies used for routine samples analysis are available in the lab.
  • Maintain communications with Lab Director or Sr. Application Scientist to ensure awareness of any deviations of required performance standards and makes recommendations for continued improvements within lab operations.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Lab Director or Sr. Application Scientist. 

As a Lab Analyst you bring:

  • BSc., M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Biological Sciences (Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biology) or closely related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience (within the last 3 years) in using plating and qPCR to perform microbial testing on samples and characterize/identify micro- organisms such as E. coli, Salmonella, and fungi.
  • Experience in developing, validating, and performing robust plating and qPCR assays for the identification and quantification of micro-organisms in samples.
  • Experience in developing and modifying SOPs relating to microbial testing.
  • Skill to accurately test large numbers of samples with reliable repeatability and commitment to achieve good quality work.
  • Experience in using LIMS system to record and document experimental activities and samples’ results.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills to meet deadlines in a fast- paced, changing environment.
  • Knowledge and understanding of GLP regulations, ISO 17025:2017 standards, CALA accreditation and proficiency testing (PT) programs is an asset.
