The Opportunity:

Reporting to the Director Technical Development and Innovation, the Maintenance Manager is responsible for the mechanical and electrical operations and reliability of the Valens’ equipment and facilities. The Maintenance Manager will be required to collaboratively work with internal and external stakeholders to achieve, promote, and manage in house preventative maintenance, maintenance contracts, real time troubleshooting and minor upgrades. This includes but is not limited to, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, controls, and building envelope and interior finishings that meet Health Canada standards. As needed, the Maintenance Manager will support the planning and execution of projects that result in safety, infrastructure, and equipment upgrades, while managing the maintenance annual budget.


As a Maintenance Manager you will:

  • Lead in-house trades, facility staff and contractors in the delivery of maintenance/facilities work
  • Determine and prioritize the annual maintenance work schedule, including support of capital projects, as required
  • Oversee contracted installers of fire alarm, security system, video surveillance, and data networks
  • Conduct regular facility inspections to identify and address issues
  • Liaise with stakeholders to ensure the effective delivery of maintenance services and projects
  • Take responsibility for the maintenance staff recruitment, training, work assignments, performance management, attendance management, coaching and initiating corrective actions where necessary
  • Develop key performance measures and metrics for the direct team in collaboration with the Director, based on company core values and industry best practices
  • Respond to facility emergencies and safety related issues
  • Ensure compliance with local safety regulations in partnership with the Health and Safety Manager
  • Other duties as assigned by management

As a Maintenance Manager you bring:

  • Post-secondary degree, diploma or certificate in Engineering, Facilities Management, Business Administration, Construction/Project Management or demonstrated combination of education and experience
  • 5+ years of direct experience in a related field, with a minimum of 3 years of leadership experience
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the BC Building Code, CEC, ASHRAE, CSA, and NFPA standards
  • Knowledge of project management principles and methodologies, capital projects, contract management, budget development, business case development and financial controls
  • Relevant Red Seal Ticket/Certification is an asset
  • Ability to lead, facilitate, influence and gain consensus with various stakeholders and teams
  • Highly conscientious and attentive; uses logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions
  • Excellent communication skills, including good presentation and report writing skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Thorough knowledge of electronic maintenance management systems and ability to use Microsoft Office 365 and Excel
  • All successful candidates are required to pass background checks
